  • Description

    • Provides specialized research support for assigned patient populations in accordance with established research protocols.
    • Performs patient evaluations, administers medications and research instruments and provides nursing support to perform specialized diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical procedures.
    • May provide direction in the development of appropriate research protocols.
    • Will work as part of a team to provide continuous programmatic coverage to screen, recruit and enroll patients in acute care related research protocols, many of which will evolve in an urgent/emergent manner.
    • Makes referrals to in-house or community professionals and serves as clinical resource and develops and conducts patient and family education, as needed.
    • Collects data, assists in developing data collection systems and compiles reports.
    • The patient population will largely consist of patients in acute care settings to include surgical ICUs and Emergency Rooms, and patients involved in complex, time sensitive surgical procedures such as organ transplants.
    • Work schedule will require call including weekend and night rotations. Additional duties will include facilitating protocol adherence, sample/data acquisition and investigational drug administration.
    • May assist in writing research grants, publications in medical and nursing literature, study materials, brochures and correspondence.
    • The work environment will include operating rooms, emergency rooms, intensive care units and other challenging environments, under potentially critical/traumatic situations.
    • Able to function independently and maintain composure under stressful situations. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
    • Performs related duties as required.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Georgia and four years of related nursing experience, preferably in acute care, surgery, transplant or related acute care specialty.
    • Must be credentialed through Emory Healthcare under the category of RN II.

    Additional Details

    This position targets an experienced research nurse clinician to enhance the patient’s research experience by protecting patients’ rights and welfare and preserving data integrity in a manner that is complementary to the clinical care pathway. The Nurse Clinician Lead will function as primary mentor to non-nurse coordinators as described below.

     

    • Engage in horizontal integration with multiple entities to bring disparate services together to enhance the patient’s experience.
    • Includes multidisciplinary teams from Emory School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Grady Memorial Hospital, external Sponsors/Institutions. Examples of activities in this category: streamline procedures to improve enrollment, protocol compliance, patient satisfaction, sample collection, informed consent process, communication pathways among multidisciplinary teams, etc.
    • Lead/advise clinical discussion with ancillary departments to advance multiple projects (i.e. advise IT staff on clinical variables and definitions relative to linking data across platforms, trouble shoot optimal methods to improve patient compliance with blood draws, collaborate with clinical nurse educators/perform training sessions to educate nursing staff of clinical research activities, identify key clinical terms for screening purposes and adverse event reporting for all studies, etc.
    • Manage daily clinical research activities especially patient screening, implementation of the informed consent process, enrollment procedures, sample collection & processing, clinical SOP adherence, and task prioritization
    • Mentor/coach research coordinators in assessing patients & families for research appropriateness, bedside nursing care management, understanding and recognizing clinical symptoms and/or factors affecting research participation
    • Mentor/coach research coordinators in clinical research regulations/GCP guidelines, adverse event identification and reporting, protocol compliance issues, etc.
    • Partner with investigators and administrative leadership to assess feasibility of new trial proposals (scientific goal, therapeutic benefit, target patient population, clinical resources, logistics)
    • Provide nursing expertise to inform standard operating procedures in content, design, implementation, and adherence
