Description

The System Director of Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) for the Emory Hospitals provides leadership for CDI strategies, initiatives and department operations across all facilities.

 

The Emory CDI Program encompasses services at the following campuses: Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory University Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, and Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital.

 

This responsibility includes CDI strategy development and implementation; planning, execution, and monitoring of progress towards department and organizational goals; adopting industry best practices; and, serving as the system subject matter expert in CDI.

 

This leader will develop and maintain strong working relationships with Medical Staff Leadership and their members, system and site specific senior leaders, system and site specific Quality leaders, other leaders in the HIM Department particularly in Coding, Hospital Revenue Cycle, and Hospital Finance.

 

Performs other related duties as required.

 

CDI Program Development

  1. Ongoing assessment of current processes and their effectiveness
  2. Builds relationships with key constituents across the enterprise
  3. Standardization of the program methodologies across the system with site-specific focus as needed
  4. Maintains up to date knowledge of industry best practices, key program metrics, and current trends and developments in CDI
  5. Focuses on communication to enhance awareness of the CDI Program and program objectives
  6. Focuses on education of CDI staff, physicians, AHP's, and other disciplines who work collaboratively with CDI

Manages Human Resource Related Functions

  1. Hires staff
  2. Performs time management and payroll activities for staff
  3. Monitors staff performance and completes performance evaluations
  4. Monitors staff education requirements
  5. Initiates staff counseling and disciplinary action when necessary

Short and Long Term Goal Development

  1. Working with CDI, HIM and system-level leadership, develops short and long term goals for area of responsibility
  2. Monitors organizational planning to assure adequate staffing
  3. Participates in budget development; and, adheres to staffing and expense targets

Subject Matter Expert

  1. Sits on committees to represent CDI or provide CDI expertise with examples being facility level CEEOC's, Data Quality and Integrity, and leads the CDI/Coding Collaborative
  2. Supports ad hoc efforts throughout the system needing CDI expertise such as the system-wide Clinical Effectiveness teams
  3. Creates and delivers presentations on topics within the CDI discipline, often to Medical Staff and/or health system senior leaders

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Five or more years of acute care med/surg bedside nursing experience
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Clinical Documentation Improvement programs at academic medical centers or complex non-academic centers
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive management experience in a multi-hospital setting
  • Demonstrated data analytics skills
  • All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board
