Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • The ECMO SPECIALIST reflects the mission, vision, and values of Emory Healthcare, adheres to the organizations Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • The specialist demonstrates a commitment to quality and excellence promoting Emory as a Center of Excellence.
  • The ECMO Specialist reports to the chief perfusionists.
  • The ECMO Specialist will be responsible for the bedside care of patients on Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS).
  • Provide ECLS care to patients within scope of Nurse Practice Act & NBRC (Respiratory Therapist) and work under the direction of Perfusion Services.
  • Collaborate with Program Director, Medical Director, Surgical Director, APP/ECMO Coordinator and Perfusionists for the educational needs of the staff in caring for ECMO patients.
  • Provide ECMO education for clinicians throughout the medical center including, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, faculty and resident physicians, and advanced practice providers.
  • Principle bedside care provider for all ECMO patients with primary duties of completing all documentation for all ECMO bedside care.
  • Maintain all quarterly and annual competencies set forth by Perfusion Educator, ECMO Liaison, and ECMO coordinator.
  • Provide clinical expertise and supervision while a patient is on ECMO.
  • This will include collaboration and discussion with ECMO physicians as well as the patients primary care team, and under direct supervision of perfusionists.
  • Under supervision of perfusionists, function as a clinical navigator for ECMO patients during the acute phase of care, subacute phase, and outpatient follow-up as needed.
  • Maintain relationships with various clinical services that support the ECMO program including (but not limited to): adult critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, general surgery, pulmonology and cardiology Participate in process improvement for the program and for the quality of clinical outcomes.
  • Assist with maintaining the database of ECMO patients, outcomes, and complications and submit to ELSO as required as well as members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Follow emerging trends in the field by reading published peer reviewed journal articles as well as attendance at regional or national conferences.
  • Potential to publish or present on topic.
  • Assist with cannulation, decannulation, and daily ECMO management.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or respiratory therapy.
  • Georgia License or eligible for Georgia License.
  • Minimum 3 years of critical care experience or has completed an approved ECLS training program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for Healthcare Providers issued by either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 30 days of hire. 

PREFERRED:

  • Demonstrated competency in critical care, interpersonal relationship skills, leadership ability, commitment to the organization and flexibility.
  • Experience building positive working relationships and facilitating high functioning teams.
  • Strong leadership capabilities through communication, education and management.
  • ECMO/MCS experience preferred

Additional Details

ECMO Specialist, Salary: min $33.81/hr. - max $60.04/hr.

 

The grade and salary of the position are based on specific criteria met within the qualifications of relevant experience, skills, performance and internal equity.

 

This position is eligible for shift differentials.
