Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Assists attending surgeon, surgical resident and/or physician's assistant during surgical procedures including retraction, hemostasis, suctioning, suturing, suture organization, wound management and other assistance as necessary.
  • Assists in opening and closing the patient's spine. Assists in opening and closing surgical wounds.
  • Performs debridement of primary and secondary closure of muscle flaps. Employees in some areas may be required to assist with bone grafts, as well as, harvest and prepare bone graft for spinal fusion.
  • Assists in spine procedures including anterior cervical disectomy/fusion, posterior cervical fusion, anterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, posterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, and insertion of spinal instruments.
  • Preps, positions, catherizes, and drapes patients and assists in exposing and suturing wounds. Assists in management of patients during emergency situations.
  • Maintains confidentiality, patient privacy, and operation room standards. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
  • Complies with and adheres to departmental policies and procedures in accordance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. Successful completion of the Emory Surgical Assistant training program or a Registered Nurse/Physician's Assistant nationally certified as an Registered Nurse First Assistant. BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation , Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
